Tis the political season…

December 24, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson Leave a Comment

Tis the night before Christmas and all through the capitol, political creatures are stirring… especially in the Senate where Senator Mike Fasano handed the media a letter requesting the Chairman of the Senate Banking & Insurance Committee (B&I) to summon the president of Citizens to be grilled on camera (my words) about “…coverage changes and homeowner policy practices that will take effect on January 1.” [Read more…] about Tis the political season…

LAWYERS & MONEY….More Than Meets the Eye!

November 10, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson Leave a Comment

In my last blog, “A License to Steal”, I referenced some rarely seen public documents that prove there’s much more to Florida’s sinkhole equation than meets the eye.  Sure, we see the rampant opportunism spawned by  an ill-advised, poorly legislated mandate–residents of sinkhole alley, terrified by landsliding home values,  filing claims for settlement cracks or, as often, for no damage at all. SINKHOLES…Florida’s License to Steal!

November 5, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson Leave a Comment

Before we look at the killing some law firms are making off of sinkhole claims, it may be appropriate to take a look at the killing being made by “some” of their clients and, of course, how they go about making that killing. [Read more…] about SINKHOLES…Florida’s License to Steal!

Bill Newton…Facts are Stubborn Things!

October 16, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson Leave a Comment

In response to my last blog on actions Citizens board could take to curtail the influx of new policies, I received comments from the president of the Florida Consumer Action Network, Bill Newton.  Bill and I have had some productive exchanges in the past. I believe there’s mutual respect and we’ve even seen eye-to-eye on a few depopulation issues. However, even if his heart is in the right place, his facts and reasoning are not. Citizens–New Board, New Direction!

October 10, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson 2 Comments

Last session’s singular focus on SB-408 ignored the fact that even massive reform is moot when facing a state run mega-competitor like Citizens. It continues to win “all” the good business, pulling in over 1,000 policies every day. Citizens CFO, Sharon Binnun testified during last week’s Senate Banking and Insurance Committee that the majority of new policies are full multi-peril homeowners which now total over  946,000.  Just two years ago, Citizens had only 607,000 such policies. Citizens Sinkholes…The Whole Truth Again!

September 26, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson Leave a Comment

I’ve been waiting for the dust to settle–for the editorials to be written, victory to be claimed by Senator Fasano and trial lawyers; accolades to be placed and misplaced–before writing about  Citizens sinkhole rate hearing.

And, of course, I’ve been waiting for the statutorily mandated, actuarially sound rate request to be  significantly reduced, as it has been.

It’s time now to pay homage to the powerful few who got what they did not need or earn, at the expense of so many who don’t deserve to pay. [Read more…] about Citizens Sinkholes…The Whole Truth Again!

CITIZENS SINKHOLES–At Least Some Are Willing to Listen!

August 21, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson Leave a Comment

Since my last post on Citizens sinkhole rate increase; the one where I mentioned that some advocating for consumers may not fully understand the issue, I’ve had communications with all of them, except Senator Fasano. Chip Merlin and Sean Shaw have both, in their own way, indicated they will take a closer look at the facts. Sean Shaw has even indicated he is doing research on specific points. Frankly, regardless of whether minds are changed, this is what I’ve come to expect from two respected lawyers and advocates; the willingness to listen and, perhaps, learn.  As for the Pasco County activist, Ginny Stevans,  not so much! CITIZENS SINKHOLES…Yet Another Look!

August 15, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson 4 Comments

In my last blog on the Citizens sinkhole rate increase I commented on the fact that Senator Mike Fasano, consumer advocates, the media and the former state Insurance Consumer Advocate (ICA) Sean Shaw, were hurting Florida consumers; the ones they claim to be advocating for. One of those on my list took time to respond and clarify her position. Her name is Ginny Stevans and because her comments and my response go right to the heart of what’s taking place, I’ve reproduced both below. [Read more…] about CITIZENS SINKHOLES…Yet Another Look!

CITIZENS SINKHOLES..Not a Pretty Sight!

August 8, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson Leave a Comment

Staggering, unconscionable, devastating, incomprehensible…such is the hyperbole misshaping both the intent and impact of Citizens sinkhole rate increase–unanimously recommended by its board week before last.  Leading the army of distortionists is Senator Mike Fasano (R-New Port Richey) and Florida’s former Insurance Consumer Advocate, now a staunch advocate for public adjusters, Sean Shaw.  [Read more…] about CITIZENS SINKHOLES..Not a Pretty Sight!

CONSUMER ADVOCATE..Right Person, Right Time!

August 4, 2011 - Opinion by Scott Johnson 2 Comments

It’s a little late to comment on the appointment of Robin Westcott to the post of Insurance Consumer Advocate, but…I thought I could share some historical perspective, point out the hypocrisy of those who criticize the appointment and congratulate Ms. Westcott all at the same time.  [Read more…] about CONSUMER ADVOCATE..Right Person, Right Time!
